"The Unanswered Why"

Text: Lamentations 5:1-22

Revelation 21:1-7

Why does God allow it? Massacres in public schools. Wars which wipe out populations of innocent people. Weather events which wipe out communities. Diseases which rob life. A few weeks ago, the story came out of Germantown, Maryland where a mother stabbed her four young children, two of them fatally.

Have you ever heard the name Dan Hurley?  He’s a street performer who’s become quite well-known on the downtown streets of Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, and other American cities.  His attire certainly helps him stand out – his signature yellow fedora hat, silk butterfly bow tie, yellow blazer, and two-tone saddle shoes.

"Allegory of the Potter"

Text: Jeremiah 18:1-11

Isaiah 64:8-12

It’s time for a little personal testimony.  When I was in college, few if any would have ever believed that it was my destiny to become a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

"What's Become of Columbine, Conyers, and Chardon?"

Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-17

1 Corinthians 3:16-20

"What If We Were Convinced?"

Text: Luke 5:1-11

Zechariah 8:20-23

The story seems straightforward enough.  Leading up to this morning’s episode, Jesus has begun to preach the good news of the Kingdom of God to the people of Capernaum.  He’s defined the liberating character of the Kingdom by exorcising a demon from a man and by healing Peter’s mother-in-law from the ravages of a high fever.

"Who Are We?"

Text: Luke 3:21-22

Romans 6:1-5

"Out With the Old, In With the New"

Text: 1 Peter 2:1-5

Psalm 34:11-22

I begin by wishing you all a slightly belated happy new year, now five days deep into 2014. I trust that you enjoyed your New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day celebrations, in whatever manner you chose to celebrate. The people of the Italian village of Sulmone, from where come my paternal family roots, have a unique, albeit odd, way of ushering in the new year.
